The 2nd International Sustainable Mountain Development and Tourism Conference and International River Congress concluded successfully on Oct. 8 in Pokhara.
More than 200 delegates including scientists, scholars, researchers from 12 countries namely Nepal, India, Japan, Bangladesh, Poland, USA, UK, Spain, Bhutan, Australia, Chile, China, Pakistan, Vietnam and Korea. More than 100 research-based papers and six key note speeches were presented at the Conference.
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriel Nishank, Member of Parliament, Former Education Minister of India, Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, spoke at the conference virtually congratulating on successful completion of the Conference and welcomed collaboration on sustainable and conservation initiatives for mountains and rivers in the region. Dr. Teiji Watanabe from Hokkaido University in Japan, and one of the Conveners of the Conference, emphasized on the importance of accurate data for more effective tourism planning and promotion.
Similarly, Dr. Michal Krobicki from AGH University in Krakow, Poland, appreciated the effort to bring together the work of scientists and researchers from all over the world to consolidate thoughts and ideas on sustainable mountains, rivers and the planet.
Ms. Anjana Poudel from Central Department of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, thanked the organizers for giving an ideal platform to young scholars to share their work and research.
NTB CEO Dr. Dhananjay Regmi said the Conference was a milestone in promoting sustainable mountain development and river conservation, and in sharing of knowledge including challenges as well as success stories and best practices. He also stressed on the importance of the knowledge sharing platform that could equip the tourism sector with good data before planning and executing for promotion and sustainable development of Nepal. Dr. Regmi said that NTB would continue to prioritize to build inclusive and accessible data system for tourism. He also thanked the Government of Gandaki Pradesh, Pokhara Metropolitan City, organizers Hokkaido University and KU, sponsors, presenters, event managers, volunteers and all involved with the Conference for putting hardwork together to make the Conference successful.
Dr. Bishwojit Roy Chaudhary, Chairman of SAIARD, India, who led the delegation of scientists and researchers from India, said the Conference was very fruitful in highlighting common issues to the table and appreciated the versatile and innovative ideas and concepts for sustainable solutions.
Dr. Rijan Bhakta Kayastha of Kathmandu University closed the 3-day event with declaration that the Conference ratified:
🌀 Identification of potential sites for geoparks and recommendation to Government of Nepal.
🌀 Emphasis on the development of regenerative tourism to address the problem of outmigration.
🌀 Clean and safe tourism development in high altitude areas with optimal use of sustainable means of energy.
🌀 Enhancement of resilience of mountain community to cope with changing climate, cryosphere and eco-system.
🌀 Use of eco and user-friendly technology with community involvement in tourism.
🌀 Marketing and development of guided and planned tourism.
Dr. Kayastha also announced that the 3rd International Sustainable Mountain Development and Tourism Conference 2024 would be held in Chitwan.
