The Tarayana Foundation, South Asia Women’s Network (SWAN), the Trans-Himalayan Environment and Livelihood Program Nepal (T-HELP), and the International Development Institute (IDI) hosted the South Asian Women’s Conference from 8th to 10th May 2025 at Thimphu, Bhutan. This landmark Conference brought together inspiring women leaders, experts, and practitioners from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka to explore cross-border cooperation, women’s empowerment, and the future of sustainable rural tourism.

Over the three days, the conference featured 6 dynamic panel discussions, 6 breakout sessions, and a special field visit to Punakha, where participants experienced a homestay run by local women entrepreneurs.

The immersive sessions during the Conference focused on success stories, challenges, and future strategies to create sustainable economic opportunities through tourism for rural women while promoting environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

At the Conference, NTB highlighted Nepal’s achievements in community-based tourism, particularly initiatives led by women.
It also showcased its efforts in supporting women entrepreneurs from rural Nepal to connect with regional and global tourism markets and effectively reach their target audiences.
