Everest Utsav 2025Monday, June 2nd, 2025
Barcelona, 31 May 2025
The Embassy of Nepal in Madrid and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) successfully organized the
"Everest Utsav" in Barcelona on 30 May 2025. This event commemorated the historic first
ascent of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa,
aiming to strengthen cultural ties and promote Nepal as a premier destination for tourism among
the Spanish community. The festival brought together mountaineers, scholars, cultural
enthusiasts, and members of the Nepali diaspora.
His Excellency Mr. Shanil Nepal, Ambassador of Nepal to Spain, inaugurated the event by
welcoming all guests and emphasizing the significance of Everest Utsav in fostering cultural
connections and honoring the legacy of mountaineering.
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by renowned Spanish mountaineer and
geologist, Professor Jerónimo López Martínez. Reflecting on his five decades old relationship
with Nepal, Professor López remarked, “Understanding Mountains holds more importance than
climbing them.” He emphasized that Nepal has become both a field of study and a personal
sanctuary for him, underscoring the profound connection between the Himalayas and those who
explore them. Professor López, who made history in 1975 by summiting Manaslu and later
Everest, shared insights into the environmental challenges facing the Himalayas, including the
impacts of climate change and the commercialization of mountaineering.
Prof. Lopez’s sentiments were echoed by other attendees, including Catalan climber and
filmmaker Mr. Jaume Altadill Clua, who is also the director of documentary "Everest 93,"
highlighting the importance of reverence and conservation in high-altitude expeditions.
Mountaineers Ms. Meri Puig Rebustes, a pioneering figure for female mountaineering in Spain,
and Mr. Lluis Belvis i del Rio, renowned Spanish mountaineer, were also felicitated in the event.
Mr. Marc Vaccaro, head of the Office of Institutional Relations of Foreign Action of the
Government of Catalonia was also present in the event and stated that Nepal holds a special
place for all the Mountaineers of Spain.
Mr. Kundan Sharma, Senior Officer at the Nepal Tourism Board, delivered a comprehensive
presentation highlighting Nepal's rich cultural heritage, diverse tourism offerings, and the
majestic allure of Mount Everest. His insights underscored Nepal's commitment to sustainable
tourism and its appeal to adventurers worldwide.
The event featured cultural performances and interactive sessions that celebrated Nepal's rich
heritage and natural beauty. Attendees expressed a deep appreciation for Nepal's landscapes,
traditions, and the warmth of its people, reinforcing the nation's image as a land that leaves an
indelible mark on the hearts of its visitors.
The Embassy of Nepal in Madrid and the Nepal Tourism Board extend their heartfelt gratitude to
all participants and supporters of Everest Utsav. This celebration not only honored a monumental
achievement in mountaineering history but also served as a bridge connecting the peoples of
Nepal and Spain through shared values of adventure, respect for nature, and cultural exchange.
