Nepal Promoted as Buddhist Pilgrimage DestinationTuesday, May 13th, 2025
Nepal Tourism Board and Nepal Embassy, Bangkok along with other organizations like Non-Resident Nepalese Association Thailand, Nepal-Thailand Friendship Association jointly organized a two day event to celebrate 2569th Buddha Jayanti on the theme, ” Nepal, Birth Place of Lord Buddha and Fountain of Peace” in Bangkok, Thailand from 11th to 12th May 2025.
An interaction program among 40 participants and stakeholders was organized on the first day when Minister of Industry, Tourism and Transport of Lumbini Province Nepal Hon. Prachanda Bikram Neupane highlighted the importance of Lumbini as a pilgrimage destination. He also expressed commitment to engage local people from the Buddhist sites for job creation and to integrate them as beneficiaries of the pilgrimage activities there. Principal Secretary of Lumbini Province Mr. Babu Ram Adhikari shared that the province would soon launch organic agro-products initiatives. Similarly, Chief and Deputies of the local bodies related to Buddha’s life in and around Lumbini shared their intiatives and programs to develop their respective municipalities for the tourist destination and economic zones.
The second day marked the Buddha Jayanti with a peace rally from Lumpini garden in Bangkok for around half an hour with participation of over 300 people. The special celebration event, organized at a hotel, witnessed the presence of Hon. Minister Neupane, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Chief Monk and other monks of Thailand, ambassadors and representatives from various diplomatic communities based in Bangkok, Nepalese delegates representing municipalities in and around Lumbini, participants from different professions and media persons. On the occasion, a comprehensive presentation on Nepal as a pilgrimage destination for Buddhist market was made by Mr. Laxman Gautam; while British archeologist Prof. Robin Cunningham made an elaborate presentation on excavation works and archeological findings of Lumbini and Tilaurakot.
Ambassador of Nepal for Thailand, Mr. Dhan Bahadur Oli welcomed all the delegates and focused on the importance of Buddha Jayanti Celebration as an international day designated by the UN as Veshakh Day observed around the world irrespective of religious and cultural differences. Speaking on the same occasion, the Chief Monk of Thailand vividly interpreted the scripts on the Ashokan pillar in Lumbini and highlighted the significance of Lumbini for the whole world.
