Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Inaugurates Annapurna Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in MyagdiTuesday, June 3rd, 2025

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. KP Sharma Oli arrived in Narachyang, Annapurna Rural Municipality-4, Myagdi district, to participate in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the historic first ascent of Mt. Annapurna (8,091m) on June 3, 2025.

The event is being organized by Annapurna Rural Municipality with promotions of Nepal Tourism Board in honor of the pioneering French climber Maurice Herzog, who, along with Louis Lachenal, became the first to summit Annapurna on June 3, 1950—making it the first mountain over 8,000 meters to be climbed in human history.

As part of the commemorations, Prime Minister Oli officially inaugurated a newly developed trekking route and an open-air museum at the Annapurna Base Camp. A commemorative statue honoring past climbers was also unveiled at the historic site.

Joining the Prime Minister at the celebrations were Hon. Badri Prasad Pandey, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation; Hon. Kham Bahadur Garbuja, State Minister for Energy, Irrigation and Water Resources; as well as other dignitaries and local representatives.

The Annapurna Base Camp, situated within Narachyang of Annapurna-4 in Myagdi district, lies at the confluence of Myagdi, Kaski, Manang, and Mustang districts, and remains one of Nepal’s iconic trekking and climbing destinations. Annapurna is revered as the “eldest mountain” for being the first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed—preceding even the successful ascent of Mount Everest by three years.

This year’s Annapurna Ascent Festival began on May 31 and will conclude in Pokhara on June 5. While previous commemorations were held in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Kaski, this is the first time the celebration is being held at the very site of the original ascent, after 75 years.

Nepal Tourism Board extends heartfelt congratulations to all stakeholders involved and expresses gratitude to all national and international guests participating in this historic celebration.
