Reliving Kanchenjunga in the Annals of British LegacyFriday, June 6th, 2025

London, June 5: On a starry night in London, emotions ran high at the Royal Geographical Society as audiences were treated to moving experiences of those who have lived the spirit of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

The occasion marked the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Kanchenjunga by a British expedition in 1955. The packed hall echoed with applause when Nepal’s own Mingma David Sherpa shared his personal journey to the summit, calling on the global community to unite in respecting mountain ecology and building a sustainable future.

The event also spotlighted the incredible contributions of the local community of the Kanchenjunga region, which is working to promote a tourism strategy centered on five key pillars aimed at ensuring the region continues to thrive in harmony with its unique biosphere and the five treasures of Mount Kanchenjunga.

Graced by the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, the evening celebrated the enduring bond between Nepal and the United Kingdom—both at the level of state relations and among the people of both nations.

Representatives from the Embassy of Nepal in the UK, the Nepal Tourism Board, and members of the Nepalese community in the UK and Nepal attended the event.

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) CEO said about the event – “Kanchenjunga is not just a mountain; it is a living heritage that connects communities, inspires adventurers, and reminds us of our shared responsibility to preserve nature. Events like this strengthen the deep friendship between Nepal and the UK while promoting a vision of sustainable and inclusive mountain tourism.”

Nepal Tourism Board remains committed to promoting Nepal’s mountain heritage on the global stage while advocating for responsible tourism that benefits both nature and local communities.
