UCLG ASPAC & NTB Meet to Discuss Regional Tourism RevivalFriday, September 10th, 2021

Secretary General of the United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) and team met with met with CEO Dr. Dhananjay Regmi and Senior Director Ms. Nandini-Lahe Thapa at Nepal Tourism Board in Bhrikutimandap on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. At the interaction, the group discussed Nepal’s revival strategies in the face of the pandemic and partnership with the ULGC programs to initiate regional dialogue among key stakeholders on steady recovery to prosperity in post Covid-19 Asia Pacific.

During the UCLG ASPAC recent online Congress from Sept. 7-9, 2021, NTB as a panelist made a presentation on Post Pandemic Tourism – Insights and Strategies, which was much appreciated by the audience. The Congress has also formed a Tourism Committee headed by Xian City of PR China where Nepal has been invited to participate as an observer.

UCLG ASPAC is a network of Mayors, Governors, and Cities in Asia and Asia Pacific with over 900 members, the largest in the global network. Its headquarters is in Jakarta, Indonesia. The global headquarters of UCLG is in Barcelona, Spain, and the only recognized local government representation by the UN. The current president of UCLG ASPAC is Mr. Ashok Kumar Byanju Shrestha, MuAN President and Mayor of Dhulikhel.

As a part of the UCLG initiation for regional cooperation for economic revival, Xian City of PR China has shared its revival practices and success stories on tourism recovery during the current times. With members, most at decision-making level, from different cities of Asia Pacific, the group is an ideal platform for synergizing revival efforts and promotion of Nepal tourism in the Asia Pacific region.

Programs initiated by the UCLG promotes sustainable practices like capacity building, human resource development and promotion of local products. Similarly, cities in different parts of the region with similar products are associated as “sister cities”, thereby, promoting bilateral tourism between destinations.
