A heartfelt tribute program was jointly organized by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Conservation Alliance Nepal to honor renowned wildlife photographer Chungba Sherpa, celebrating his invaluable contributions to wildlife photography and conservation tourism in Nepal. The event, held in NTB premises on February 13, 2025, highlighted his enduring impact on Nepal’s biodiversity documentation and promotion.
The program was graced by Hon’ble Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi, as the chief guest. Minister Shahi praised Sherpa’s work, stating, “Chungba Sherpa’s dedication to wildlife photography and conservation has been instrumental in showcasing Nepal’s natural heritage to the world. His work will continue to inspire generations of photographers and conservationists.”
NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi also expressed his admiration, adding, “Chungba Sherpa’s work transcends photography; it has been instrumental in bringing Nepal’s incredible wildlife and conservation efforts to the world stage. His images have inspired both travelers and conservationists alike, showcasing Nepal as a sanctuary for diverse and endangered species.”
Sherpa’s work played a crucial role in raising awareness about Nepal’s rich biodiversity. Through his lens, he captured rare and endangered species, including the elusive snow leopard in the Khumbu region, red pandas, and a wide array of Himalayan birds. His images not only enriched global wildlife archives but also contributed to conservation efforts by highlighting the importance of protecting Nepal’s natural heritage.
Born in Lukla, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Solukhumbu, Sherpa was deeply connected to the landscapes he documented. Beyond photography, he was an active figure in politics, social service, and tourism. As the former Chief of Chaurikharka Village Development Committee and a local leader, he worked toward community development. His contributions extended to education, where he served as chairman of a school management committee.
Sherpa’s extensive career in tourism and hospitality, including his tenure at Yeti Airlines and experience in hotel management, complemented his mission to promote Nepal’s natural beauty. Remarkably, he embraced wildlife photography at the age of 57, yet his passion and talent quickly earned him international recognition. His images have been featured in prestigious platforms, helping to position Nepal as a global ecotourism destination.
During the tribute event, a documentary on Sherpa’s life and work was screened, celebrating his extraordinary journey and contributions. Associated with various national and international photography organizations, Sherpa passed away at the age of 64 on January 12, 2025.
