Diplomatic Retreat in Ilam Showcases Eastern Nepal’s Tourism PotentialWednesday, April 16th, 2025
Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organised a three-day Diplomatic Retreat to Ilam from 13th to 15th April 2025, in the tranquil landscapes of Kanyam and surrounding areas. This unique initiative was designed to strengthen Nepal’s engagement with the international community while promoting the diverse tourism experiences of eastern Nepal.
Twelve Ambassadors and Charge d’Affaires, along with their spouses, representing countries including Egypt, Republic of Korea, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Thailand, Australia, France, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, as well as representatives from ICIMOD, participated in the retreat. Under the leadership of Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, the participating ambassadors and representatives from international organisations experienced Ilam’s peaceful environment, hill lifestyle, and its natural and cultural diversity.
Throughout the retreat, delegates explored the famous Ilam Tea Gardens, experienced the spectacular sunrise from Shree Antu, and participated in a tea plucking competition—connecting firsthand with the region’s iconic tea culture. Activities like boating and fishing at the scenic Antu Pokhari added recreational delight to the immersive journey.
Deepak Raj Joshi, CEO of Nepal Tourism Board, remarked, “Nepal is more than the Himalayas. It is a vibrant mosaic of landscapes, cultures, and experiences. Through initiatives like this, we connect Nepal to the world by highlighting hidden gems like Ilam. With Visit Koshi Year 2082 currently underway, this retreat also serves as a timely contribution to promoting the tourism potential of Koshi Province and the country as a whole.”
This retreat is a key part of NTB’s efforts to showcase Nepal’s lesser-explored destinations, reinforcing its vision of inclusive, regionally balanced tourism development. By engaging with the diplomatic community, NTB continues to expand Nepal’s tourism outreach and invite the world to experience the richness of its people and places.
