Telling Tourism Stories Through the Camera Lens -Tourism Photojournalism Training BeginsWednesday, November 12th, 2025

Biratnagar | Koshi Province
A two-day Tourism Photojournalism Training began on Tuesday in Biratnagar, the capital of Koshi Province, with the goal of teaching participants how to tell stories of tourism through the camera lens. The training is organized under the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP) jointly implemented by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the National Forum of Photo Journalists (NFPJ).

Representatives from all 14 districts of Koshi Province — two participants from each district — are taking part in the training. It aims to enhance their ability to capture and express Nepal’s beauty, culture, and human stories through photography.
Speaking at the opening session, Sushila Baral, Senior Officer at NTB, said that such training programs are being conducted in all seven provinces in different phases to strengthen capacity building and promote tourism. She stated,

“The media has always played a vital role in the development of Nepal’s tourism sector. With the rapid advancement of technology, global tourism trends are also evolving. In this context, the Nepal Tourism Board has organized this training to promote tourism destinations and enhance the skills of journalists. We believe that after this training, participants will help present the tourism stories of Koshi Province to the world through the power of photography.”
Similarly, Sushila Pathak, Chairperson of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Morang Chapter, remarked that such training is especially important at a time when the quality of journalism in Nepal is declining. She said,

“Media quality has been weakening in recent years. As we struggle to keep up with technology and the growing influence of social media, I urge journalists to focus on promoting Koshi’s tourism destinations. We need more consistent skill development and capacity-building programs like this in the future.”
Pradip Raj Bant, President of the National Forum of Photo Journalists (NFPJ), emphasized the growing importance of combining tourism and photojournalism. He said,
“If we fail to show Nepal to the world through our lenses, we risk being left behind. Journalism is essential for sustainable tourism development. A single photograph can express a thousand words — this training will help journalists across the country showcase Nepal’s tourism destinations to the world.”
In the first session, Dilip Prakash Karki, Communication Consultant at NTB, provided insights into the objectives of the Tourism Board, the importance of tourism journalism, and its processes. Trainers Sunil Chuda Bajracharya, Prakash Chandra Timilsina, and Pradip Raj Bant led both theoretical and practical sessions on the evolution of photojournalism, the importance of strong visual storytelling, and techniques for capturing impactful photographs.
The training program was facilitated by Pradeep Shrestha, Treasurer of the National Forum of Photo Journalists (NFPJ).
